Two Mabru units, one on each voltage, so the boat is comfortable whether you’re at anchor or at a marina. The 12V unit runs straight off the lithium bank — no inverter needed, no generator to fire up just to cool down for an hour. The 110V unit is for when you’re on shore power and want to keep the batteries fully topped up.

Everything you need to navigate is new, and everything is integrated. The core is a Raymarine Axiom 12” chartplotter with a complete Navionics cartography package — the US east coast, the Caribbean, and down into South America. On top of that we added an Orca nav display mounted at the nav station but detachable, so you can carry it out to the helm when you want instruments in your hands. It’s interfaced with the Raymarine system for redundancy and works as either a chartplotter or an instrument display.

We also installed a Predict Wind Hub, which uploads our position via Starlink in real time — friends and family could follow our boat on our blog without us having to lift a finger.

The boat is wired for both 110V and 220V and has two shore power inlets, so wherever you tie up — US, Caribbean, Europe — you can plug in. On top of that, there are separate Victron inverter/chargers for each voltage: a 3000W 230V unit and a Multiplus 12/3000 120/50. That means any appliance you bring aboard from any region just works, and the charger side keeps the lithium bank topped up from shore or generator.

The new 1,280Ah lithium house bank was installed professionally by marine electricians in St. Augustine, with additional safety cutoffs and kill switches added on top of the factory BMS — a belt-and-suspenders setup. Fully charged, the bank holds for days under normal cruising loads.

The solar panels are positioned well — on the coach roof and bimini — so they avoid most of the usual shading issues and routinely put out close to their rated output. The engines also carry secondary high-output alternators, so any time you’re motoring you’re charging the bank hard. Between solar, alternators, and a short generator run every few days to make water, we rarely think about power.

Installed new by us. The Rainman Modular AC-140 HighOutput is the top unit in their AC line — two 40″ Dow Filmtec RO membranes, a 316 stainless steel General Pump high-pressure pump, and a Jabsco lift pump. Production runs 26–37 gallons per hour depending on water temperature, and the whole system draws about 1,300 watts in steady state — easy work for the generator or the 3kW Victron inverter.

A lot of Rainman installs are bucket-and-hose setups — great when you buy the unit, less great five years in when you’re pickling it on deck in a crosswind. We had ours plumbed properly into the boat from day one. You can fill either water tank individually with production water, and when the boat sits for a while you pickle the system by adding chemical to its own reservoir — no buckets, no disassembly.

The original owners were aerospace-engineer types who specified this boat to a higher standard than the production spec sheet. The rear deck was extended nearly double — meaning you can still walk from one sugar scoop to the other even with the dinghy in its chocks. It becomes its own back porch: a place to sit, dry gear, and relax without ever having to move the tender.

Each sugar scoop has hot-and-cold freshwater showers right where you come back aboard from the beach, and the stern lockers are deep enough to double as dive-tank storage.

Designed for a family that works from the water. We ran a business, homeschooled two kids, and held team meetings from this boat across a full Caribbean cruising season. Five distinct workspaces mean multiple people can take calls, focus, or just hang out at the same time without treading on each other — and each spot has power, Wi-Fi, and airflow.

There’s also a TV in the owner’s cabin on the same Wi-Fi, and a local antenna for broadcast if you’d rather.

The dinghy gets used hard on a cruising boat, and this one is set up accordingly. A full-size Zodiac 12.5’ with center console and wheel, electric start, electric trim, and a 25hp 4-stroke with fewer than 100 hours on it — gets on plane, hauls four adults, and covers real distance.

The hidden gem: the original owners specified an auxiliary aluminum gasoline tank built into the starboard sugar scoop with a filler hose. You pull the dinghy up to the stern, connect the hose, and refill from the boat. Top off the main tank once a season and you never think about dinghy gas again.

This is our second long Caribbean cruise. Our first one was without a washing machine. Our second is with one. The difference is enormous — laundromat runs used to eat a whole day every week and forced us into marinas or towns we didn’t want to be in. Now we anchor wherever we want, for as long as we want.

And we rigged permanent drying lines under the cockpit roof — clothes stay out of the rain, so a passing squall doesn’t restart your laundry day.

Most 15-year-old diesels hide deferred maintenance. These don’t. The Yanmars were brought down to the frames: rebuilt alternators, every hose and belt replaced, new motor mounts, serviced heat exchangers, engine rooms repainted so any future drip is obvious at a glance. The saildrives are brand-new SD60 units installed in 2025, and the Brunton Auto Props were sent back to the factory rep for new bearings and service.

The combination is genuinely efficient. Seven knots of boat speed at 1,500 RPM in flat conditions — and because she’s designed around a long 50’ waterline, she runs very happily on one engine. On an ocean crossing you can alternate engines and still hold six knots cruising. Top speed under power is about nine knots.

When you turn the engines off, the Brunton props feather automatically — put them in gear, they lock, and you pick up roughly another knot of sailing speed compared to fixed props.

Solar gives you a lot, but not at night and not in rain squalls. The D400 fills the gap. It’s known for being one of the few wind generators you can actually sleep under.
